The protagonist goes by whatever name the player chooses, though he's called Akira Kurusu in the manga and Ren Amamiya in the anime.
A transfer student at Shujin Academy, he starts out powerless and boxed in by the system—just another high schooler following the rules. Physically, he's a tall, slim guy with pale skin and messy black hair that hangs in his face. His personality swings between eerily composed and outright cocky depending on what you pick to say.
But there's way more going on underneath. He's a Wild Card with the rare ability to wield multiple personas, and he becomes the driving force behind the Phantom Thieves—a group of rebels determined to change society by reaching into people's hearts and pulling off heists in the Metaverse. His code name among the crew is Joker. The residents of the Velvet Room, though, know him as the Trickster, a title that fits his whole deal pretty well.
He's collected plenty of nicknames over the course of the game: Leader, Senpai, Prisoner, and the more affectionate (if slightly mocking) "little guinea pig" courtesy of Tae Takemi.
