Ataru's defining characteristic is his legendarily terrible luck—he was literally born on the unluckiest day in the Buddhist calendar, which pretty much explains everything about him. He's lazy, not particularly bright, and constantly chasing women with all the subtlety of a charging rhino. His idea of flirting is walking up to complete strangers and immediately asking for their name, phone number, and address. It's the kind of thing that would get most people arrested, but somehow Ataru just. keeps doing it.
His dream is straightforward: surround himself with a harem of gorgeous exotic women. Lum and her alien friends top the list, and once he locks onto a target, basically nothing in the universe will stop him from pursuing it.
Despite spending most of his time trying to ditch Lum and hit on literally anyone else, fans often note that his actual feelings run deeper. He won't openly admit it, but the later episodes make it pretty clear—Lum's the one he really cares about. The whole "chasing other women" thing? That's more complicated than it looks.
