Shiho works as a coordinator and serves as part of Yzak Joule's squadron, easily recognizable in ZAFT's distinctive red pilot suit. She earned the nickname "Housenka"—Balsam—from Yzak himself, a reference to her combat style that sends beams scattering in all directions like flower petals. She even wears the balsam flower as her personal insignia.
Her technical skills are just as sharp as her piloting. She spent considerable time troubleshooting the beam weapon systems on the new CGUE Deep Arms, working closely with Yzak to iron out the design's many problems until they got it working. She's best known for piloting the standard ZGMF-515 CGUE and eventually the YFX-200 CGUE Deep Arms, a custom suit that reflected all that development work.
During the Bloody Valentine War, Shiho joined the Joule Squadron in time for the Second Battle of Jachin Due, where she went up against Earth Alliance ace Rena Imelia. After the war wrapped up, she took a brief leave from the squadron to fight in the U.S.S.A.'s independence conflict. Once Yzak returned to active duty, she came back to rejoin him, this time piloting a custom ZGMF-1000/M Blaze ZAKU Warrior.
Fans have long noted that Shiho seems to harbor romantic feelings for Yzak, though he remains completely oblivious to them.
