A Corporal in the Imperial Japanese Army, Suwa is a C-class vampire who's been around since before the Edo period—which means he's seen centuries pass. He got turned sometime during the Azuchi-Momoyama period when he was just a kid, somewhere between 14 and 16 years old. That was so long ago that he barely remembers being human anymore.
Suwa actually chose his own name after his infection. He went with "Suwa" because it's pretty much his only real memory from his human life—playing as a child near the Suwa shrine. There's something oddly touching about that, honestly. He's had to adapt to survive through all the chaos of Japanese history, and these days he relies on a mask to keep his blood-hunting instincts in check by hiding the smell of it.
He carries eleven stigmata across his body. Fans often note the irony that he's become known as "the vampire who hates vampires"—a creature of his kind who seemingly can't stand what he's become. It's a pretty compelling contradiction that defines a lot of his character.
