Betrayed by treachery, the kingdom of Parse is crushed by its ancient rival Lusitania. The capital, Ecbatana, burns to the ground. Only a handful escape: Arslan, the teenage heir to the throne; Daryoon, a general who stayed loyal; and Narsus, a retired military strategist traveling with his student Elam. They're soon joined by Gieve, a wandering musician; Alfreed, a thief princess with a crush on Narsus; and Pharangese, a priestess sworn to protect Arslan. Determined to reclaim his crown, Arslan must fight off the Lusitanian occupation while also dealing with Hermes, a silver-helmed knight who's declared himself the true heir. What follows is a brutal campaign for a fourteen-year-old who's spent his whole life hating war—but who now has to lead a rebellion to free his people and topple the corrupt aristocracy keeping them enslaved.
