Professional mangaka Rohan Kishibe once witnessed something impossible—the darkest color he's ever seen. It's connected to a bizarre incident where a French translator, a Louvre curator, and two firemen all vanished without explanation. The color's origin goes back three centuries to a Japanese artist named Nizaemon Yamamura, who discovered the blackest pigment in existence. He was executed for cutting down an ancient tree to get it. After his death, rumors spread that a curse haunted every painting he'd used the pigment on, filling them with pure hatred. When Nanase Fujikura tells Rohan the legend, he becomes obsessed with finding one of Nizaemon's surviving works—supposedly smuggled to the Louvre by a curator. A decade later, Rohan finally makes it to Paris to track down the painting. As he starts digging through the museum's archives, he quickly realizes the curse is far worse than he bargained for.
