Kawanabe is best known for voice acting, but he's also worked steadily as a screen and stage actor—picking up TV commercial gigs and appearing in various theatre productions alongside his seiyuu work. He landed a role in the TV drama "Sayonara, Ozu-sensei" and played Saitou in the live-action "GTO" film.
He and Takayuki Ishiguro, who voiced Yuuya Daigo in "Tokyo Majin Gakuen," were close enough to share an apartment. Kawanabe has said that Ishiguro is such a great cook he was never left hungry. Outside of voice work, Kawanabe enjoys drawing—some of his comic artwork actually appeared in bulletins for the "Tokyo Majin Gakuen" fan club.
