Based in Adachi-ku, Tokyo, where he was born and still lives, this artist got his start as a manga assistant—a role he's openly admitted he was terrible at, calling himself "horrible" and "lazy" back then. He also spent time working as an H manga artist before landing on the projects that would define his career.
Before breaking through, he churned out a string of relatively obscure manga titles: Angel Dust, Coyote, Gun Mania, and Hi-Tension. None of them really took off, but they were part of his journey.
His big break came with Hellsing, which began serialization in Young King OURs starting in late 1997. The series found a devoted audience and established him as a legitimate force in manga.
