Ichigo Momomiya's thrilled to start high school and hopefully find romance. She gets her wish when she meets Masaya Aoyama, a popular, good-looking guy who seems perfect. When she discovers he cares deeply about the environment, she jumps at the chance to ask him out using tickets to an endangered animal exhibition. During their date, a strange light strikes Ichigo and she blacks out. She comes to with Masaya looking over her, seemingly fine—until a giant rat creature shows up and hurts him. Desperate to protect her crush, Ichigo's latent powers kick in and she transforms into a cat-powered magical girl who easily takes down the monster. Afterward, two researchers named Ryou Shirogane and Keiichiro Akasaka fill her in: she's been recruited for the Mew Project, an elite team of five magical girls whose DNA has been fused with endangered animal DNA. Turns out there's an alien threat behind all this. These beings called Chimera Anima are trying to invade Earth, and Ichigo needs to track down her four teammates fast if they want any shot at stopping them.
