Kyou is best known for being a hot-headed, easily provoked guy who seems ready to fight at any moment. Like everyone in the Sohma family, he's cursed to transform into a Zodiac animal when hugged by someone of the opposite sex—specifically the cat. This wouldn't be such a sore subject if the rat hadn't screwed him out of a spot in the official twelve back in legend, which is why Kyou absolutely despises Yuki, the family's current rat. The two are constantly at each other's throats, and Kyou loses every single time, which only makes him angrier.
His family basically isolated him from the rest of the clan, including his own parents. Fans often note that this separation clearly shaped who he is—his stubbornness and short fuse don't come out of nowhere. He trains obsessively in martial arts, determined to eventually beat Yuki, and his karate master is one of the few people he genuinely respects.
