About Aida, Kensuke

Kensuke Aida is a military enthusiast and self-proclaimed otaku who's best known as Toji's closest friend and one of the Eva pilot candidates in Shinji's class. He spends his free time camping in the mountains around Tokyo-3 and doing solo war reenactments—basically his ideal way to spend a weekend. He's genuinely obsessed with becoming an Eva pilot himself, constantly bugging Shinji to use his connections at NERV to get him selected, even though Shinji keeps telling him he has zero influence over that stuff. The thing is, Kensuke doesn't really seem to grasp just how brutal piloting actually is. That said, he's more than happy to enjoy the perks of being friends with an actual pilot—he and Toji tagged along when Shinji went to check out the UN fleet during Unit 02's transport. Kensuke's one of those guys who's glued to his camcorder at all times, always recording something. He also shares a crush on Misato Katsuragi with Toji, and like pretty much everyone in his class, his mother is dead. The character's named after a protagonist from Ryu Murakami's novel The Fascism of Love and Fantasies, and fans have noted he bears a striking resemblance to Jean from Hideaki Anno's earlier series Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water.
