Known relatives: Sakura Suzuhara (sister) Touji's the classic tough guy—athletic, loud, always ready for a fight. He and Asuka constantly butt heads, but his real anger comes from something deeper: his sister Sakura gets caught in the crossfire during Sachiel's attack on Tokyo-3, and he blames Shinji for it. He actually beats Shinji up over it, pretty brutally. But Touji's character shifts once he sees what piloting Unit 01 actually does to Shinji. Watching him suffer through the Shamshel battle changes his perspective entirely. The respect comes first, then genuine friendship. It's one of the cleaner arcs in the series—two guys who started at odds finding common ground through understanding what the other's really going through. His name's a reference to Ryuu Murakami's novel Ai to Gensou no Fascism (The Fascism of Love and Fantasy), which was pretty typical for Evangelion's literary-minded character naming.
