Sabo comes from nobility but rejected that life entirely, choosing instead to live rough in the Gray Terminal. He eventually made his way to sea on his own terms. About a dozen years before the main story picks up, he became best friends with Ace and later Luffy—the three considered themselves brothers. All three shared the same dream: becoming pirates to chase freedom on the open ocean. They made a pact to set sail together when they turned 17.
