Ryou comes from old money—his surname literally translates to "platinum," which basically says it all. He's a certified genius with an IQ over 180, supposedly educated at an American university, and he's the brains behind the entire Mew Mew project. His expertise in genetics is unmatched among the cast, which makes sense given that he's the one who engineered the DNA fusion technology in the first place.
What most people don't know is that Ryou tested the transformation on himself first to make sure it was safe for humans. That's how he ended up with his own cat form—a grey cat named Alto who becomes a regular fixture around Ichigo, helping her out and offering support in his own feline way. Like the rest of the Mew Mews, he has a DNA mark, though his is hidden beneath his collar on the right side of his neck.
Personality-wise, Ryou's kind of insufferable at first. He's distant, sarcastic, and rude to basically everyone except his childhood friend Akasaka. His wealth and intelligence have made him arrogant, and past events in his life haven't helped matters. But as the series goes on, it becomes clear he's got a softer side—Ichigo picks up on it eventually, especially when he's quietly encouraging Lettuce through her confidence issues. He's got it bad for Ichigo, though the feeling definitely isn't mutual. He and Ichigo spend a lot of time bickering and teasing each other, which is where his more immature side comes out; underneath the attitude, though, he's genuinely decent.
