Sean Schemmel is best known as the English voice of Goku in Dragon Ball Z—a role that basically defined his career, even though he didn't realize it at first. He originally auditioned for Captain Ginyu and was genuinely disappointed when he didn't land it. Once he started voicing Goku, it took him a few episodes to clock that he'd actually gotten the lead character. In retrospect, it worked out pretty well.
Before breaking into voice acting, Schemmel spent years working as a classical musician. He transitioned into the industry through voice-over work for puppet theaters, which eventually led to his anime voice acting career.
Beyond Goku, he counts Onsokumaru among his favorite roles. His work has earned recognition too—he won Best Male Lead Vocal Performance in an Anime Movie/Special at the 3rd Annual BTVA Anime Dub Awards, taking both the Staff Choice and People's Choice categories.
