Flegel came from high nobility—he was Duke Otto von Braunschweig's nephew. In 486 of the Imperial Calendar, he got involved in the interrogation of then-Rear Admiral Wolfgang Mittermeyer, hiring someone to torture him when official questioning didn't work, and even tried beating the guy himself. But when Mittermeyer called him out for being a coward for attacking a restrained man, Flegel's pride got the better of him. He actually removed Mittermeyer's handcuffs to fight fair and got absolutely demolished for it. Panicking, he called for his men to shoot Mittermeyer—except Admiral Reinhard von Müsel showed up and stopped that from happening, having been asked to intervene by Rear Admiral Oskar von Reuenthal.
