Murata Tetsuko is a swordsmith working in Edo and the daughter of the legendary swordsmith Murata Jintetsu. Both her father and older brother Murata Tetsuya have passed away. Despite her quiet demeanor, she's become a trusted ally to Sakata Gintoki and the Yorozuya crew over the years.
Fans often note that Tetsuko comes across as shy and reserved—she barely managed a proper greeting when she first met Gintoki during the Benizakura arc. But she's genuinely kind underneath the withdrawn exterior. Her quiet nature actually contrasts sharply with her late brother's tendency to shout while trying to speak normally due to his hearing problems. Tetsuko, by contrast, has a naturally soft voice.
She's proven herself reliable when it counts. Most memorably, she saved Gintoki's life during the Benizakura incident, and later appeared again during the Itou arc when the Yorozuya brought Hijikata Toushirou to her—he'd been cursed by a possessed sword he'd acquired. That's when her deep knowledge of swordcraft really came through; she explained the whole history of the hikikomori curse plaguing him and his blade.
Beyond her work as a swordsmith, Tetsuko also stood with the people of Kabuki District when they fought to defend their home during the war.
