Meowth is a small, feline Pokémon with cream-colored fur that darkens to brown on its hind paws and tail. It's got an egg-shaped head, four whiskers, wide eyes with slit pupils, and a distinctive gold koban coin embedded in its forehead. Its black ears have brown insides and are flanked by longer whiskers. The tail curls tightly at the tip.
What makes Meowth interesting is that it can fully retract its claws for silent movement, and while games usually show it walking upright, it normally gets around on all fours. It's drawn to anything round and shiny, and famously produces coins using its signature move, Pay Day. Being nocturnal, it roams city streets at night collecting anything that sparkles—loose change included. When it spots something shiny, its eyes light up and the coin on its forehead glows.
Meowth is playful but moody, and notably, at least one member of the species has taught itself human speech. It tends to live in urban areas and apparently sleeps surrounded by the coins it's collected.
Regional variants exist in Alola and Galar. Alolan Meowth has light blue-gray fur with whitish-gray markings instead of brown, slightly curved whiskers, and silvery eyes—the result of being gifted to Alolan royalty generations ago. It developed into an arrogant, selfish version of its ancestor, becoming difficult to train despite being popular with certain trainers. Galarian Meowth, by contrast, has a shaggy greyish-brown coat like a beard, yellow eyes, and a toothy grin. Its coin turned black and iron-hard from living alongside Viking-like seafarers, and it evolved into Perrserker instead of Persian. The two regional forms famously don't get along.
Meowth can also Gigantamax. In this form it grows larger and longer, its eyes turn glowing gold, and the coin gains a new symbol. Three red clouds surround its lower body. Its obsession with shiny objects intensifies to the point of damaging skyscraper windows. The giant coin emits massive Gigantamax energy, and that symbol is theorized to hold the key to understanding Dynamax itself.
