She's taken in by Shigure and Yuki, who offer her room and board in exchange for housekeeping—a role she genuinely excels at and loves. She's unfailingly polite, optimistic, and kind to a fault. Friends like Kyou, Rin, and Hanajima have all called her out for prioritizing everyone else's needs over her own.
Her most distinctive trait is how formally she speaks, often imperfectly. She picked up this habit from her father, Katsuya, who died when she was three—speaking like him became her way of keeping him present for her mother. Her mother, Kyouko, raised her alone until a car accident took her shortly after Tooru started high school. Tooru was extremely close to her mother and treasures her memory, to the point where she later struggles with guilt when she falls in love with Kyou, feeling like she's being unfaithful to her mother's legacy.
