Her real name is Horie Yoshiko, though fans affectionately call her "Hocchan." She's best known for her voice acting work, but she's also a radio host, musician, and founding member of the J-pop group Aice⁵. When she's not working, she enjoys shoulder massage, reading, and cooking.
Horie got into voice acting as a kid after falling in love with the anime Dirty Pair—that show basically changed her life and pointed her toward becoming a seiyuu. She debuted in 1997 in the video game Voice Fantasia and spent several years in minor roles before landing her first lead as Haruka in Kurogane Communication. The real breakthrough came in 2000 with Naru Narusegawa in Love Hina, a role that made her name. She followed that up with Honda Tooru in Fruits Basket (2001), cementing her status as one of Japan's most sought-after voice actresses. She also released her first album, Mizutamari ni Utsuru Sekai, that same year.
In 2001, she teamed up with fellow seiyuu Tamura Yukari for a temporary project called Yamato Nadeshiko. They put out two singles—"Mou Hitori no Watashi" and "Merry Merrily," the latter appearing in the Love Hina Christmas Special. A few years later, in 2005, Horie founded Aice⁵, a five-member pop group with seiyuu Akemi Kanda, Chiaki Takahashi, Masumi Asano, and Madoka Kimura, designed to boost their music careers. The group disbanded in September 2007.
She's also collaborated with other acts over the years, including Unscandal (2005) and the Japanese goth band Kurobara Hozonkai (2007), where she performs as Yuiel. She left Arts Vision in mid-2007 following management turmoil and has since worked as a freelance voice actress. Her music releases—six albums so far—typically feature tracks from anime projects she's been involved with. These days she releases through Starchild, a King Records subsidiary.
