Gouki is a master of classical jujutsu steeped in samurai tradition, though his fighting style draws heavily from aikido principles—he's known for turning opponents' own force against them. At sixty years old, he's been training since before World War II, back when the martial arts scene was fundamentally different. He claims to have killed many people over his lifetime, and his matches reveal an unsettling, almost unhinged side to his personality.
In the Maximum Tournament, Gouki makes it to the semi-finals, defeating Roger Harlon and Shinogi Koushou before losing to Jack Hanma in the fourth round. His third fight with Doppo particularly stands out for how erratic he becomes in the ring. Beyond the tournament, he also joins forces with Baki to take on the dangerous convict Yanagi Ryukou during the Search for Our Strongest Hero arc, and has sparring sessions with both Biscuit Oliva and Mohammad Ali Jr.
Outside of combat, Gouki is genuinely eccentric and a bit scattered—he lives fearlessly and without much concern for the world around him. Interestingly, while the story positions him as jujutsu's representative during his fights, his techniques look far more like aikido, and his whole demeanor echoes real-life aikido master Gozo Shioda, founder of Yoshinkan Aikido.
