Masako Sugaya was a Tokyo-based voice actress best known for her work across several decades of classic anime. She got her start early, debuting in Osamu Tezuka's Tetsuwan Atom back in 1963. From there, she built up an impressive resume—fans often remember her as Maki Aikawa in Ace wo Nerae!, Rémi in Ie Naki ko Remy, and the voice of Kenichi Mitsuba in Ninja Hattori-kun. She also voiced Kitsune and Oshima in Urusei Yatsura, among plenty of other characters throughout her career.
Her connections to the anime industry ran deep. She attended Tokyo Metropolitan Kitazono High School, the same school that would later produce renowned director Osamu Dezaki—and she ended up working on several of his projects over the years. Throughout her career, she was affiliated with various theatre troupes and talent agencies before settling with Arts Vision, who represented her from that point until her death in 2021.
