Baki Hanma is the main character and son of Yuujirou Hanma. He started training in martial arts at three years old, bouncing between different coaches until age thirteen, when he decided to strike out on his own and pursue more brutal training methods inspired by his father. Meeting Yuujirou later turned out to be disillusioning—Baki realized who his father really was and made it his goal to defeat and kill him.
His fighting style, called "Total Fighting," pulls from multiple martial arts disciplines. He's best known for his unorthodox training regimen, which includes extensive shadowboxing where he visualizes opponents so vividly they sometimes take on an almost physical presence. This lets him study and exploit weaknesses before actual fights, giving him a massive advantage. Fighters in the underground arena respect these methods, even if they seem weird to outsiders. Baki can also replicate any technique he witnesses, making him incredibly adaptable.
Unlike his father, Baki deliberately controls his killing intent and fights with honor, whatever the cost. During a tournament, he faced Arudi Regan, Zool, Igari Kanji, and Retsu Kaioh before meeting his brother in the finals. The match against his brother actually triggered the emergence of an ogre or demon face on his back—a mark Baki managed to suppress.
He's encountered all the escaped convicts during the "Search of Our Strongest Hero" arc and recently took down Biscuit Oliva. He even shadowboxed a T-Rex at one point. His current challenge is against Pickle, a prehistoric fighter, though he's already lost that initial encounter in the Korakuen area.
