Makino started piano lessons at four years old and caught the attention of director Shunji Iwai by age seven. She went on to perform piano solos for three of his films between ages 8 and 17, including the romance film Love Letter. She also composed and performed the ending theme for the Wii game Arc Rise Fantasia—"Tenshi no Hashigo ~crepuscular rays~"—writing both the music and lyrics herself.
As a voice actress, she's probably best known for playing Misaki Nakahara in Welcome to the N.H.K!, a role that earned her a nomination for Best Young Seiyuu. Beyond voice work, she appeared in two films and a TV drama, plus various commercials.
Her career took her internationally as well. She performed at Japan Expo 2009 in France, the New York Anime Festival that same year as a guest of honor, and participated in cultural exchange events across Shanghai, Singapore, Rome, and elsewhere between 2007 and 2010.
Makino graduated from Tokyo College of Music in 2008 as a piano major, finishing her senior year ensemble with the top score in her class. She was signed to BGB Company before moving to AMUSE on May 1, 2012, where she currently records under Imperial Records. In 2020, she married singer Yuutarou Miura on June 12.
