Manaka Iwami got into voice acting after watching Ai Kayano perform in Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai back in middle school. She wasn't the most confident kid growing up, and figured she'd need a head start if she wanted to make it professionally. So she basically gave her father an ultimatum: let her go to seiyuu training school or she wouldn't go to high school. He agreed.
In 2016, she landed the lead role of Maquia in Sayonara no Asa ni Yakusoku no Hana wo Kazarou through audition. The film was Mari Okada's directorial debut—Okada also wrote the screenplay for AnoHana, the very show that inspired Iwami in the first place. And here's the kicker: Ai Kayano was cast in a supporting role, so Iwami actually got to meet her childhood role model on set.
The film didn't hit theaters until 2018, though, so Iwami's actual screen debut came first in 2017 with the TV series Tsuki ga Kirei.
